Three decades and 10 smiling faces of Fort St. John Rotary presidents!

On Saturday, June 18, we held our annual President’s Ball at the Ross H. MacLean Rotary Park at Charlie Lake, celebrating a successful year under outgoing president Vince van Wieringen, and passing the torch to incoming president Samantha Warren.

Bruce Christensen, Past President 1995-96

This past year had its challenges for sure — half a year of Zoom, half a year of in-person lunch meetings due to Covid restrictions — but Rotarians kept active to ensure our Drive-Thru Breakfast, Mega Lottery, and Mother’s Day Run continued to raise critical funds for nonprofit initiatives improving the quality of life in our community.

Being a Rotarian and building community and fellowship with our neighbours is always a ton of fun. And being Club President is a big commitment that takes a ton of time, effort, and organization to keep us all going.

We’re very excited to have Samantha step in as President and continue growing Rotary in Fort St. John as we head into our 60th year in 2023!

The Rotary Club of Fort St. John is pleased to announce $22,917.17 was raised and donated from this year’s Drive Thru Breakfast in support of senior programs and projects in Fort St. John.

Funds are supporting four well-deserving non-profit organizations that have been working hard to provide food, home services, and social spaces to meet the needs of our city’s quickly growing elderly population. The organizations that are benefitting from this year’s proceeds are:

North Peace Seniors Housing Society: A $13,000 donation to upgrade and build a washroom in the Solarium at Apartment 2. We are honoured to provide this for seniors, allowing them to have a better time and convenient access to a washroom facility while enjoying this wonderful gathering space.

The Salvation Army Fort St. John: A $5,000 donation to support meals for six seniors through the Food Bank for a year in 2022. We are honoured to be able to provide this for seniors in need, allowing them to have access to nutritious food and the services the Salvation Army team provides.

Fort St. John and Area Senior Care Foundation: A $3,300 donation will feed 10 seniors for a month through the Meals On Wheels program. We are honoured to provide this for seniors, allowing them to have consistent access to home-cooked meals and allowing them to have personal interactions with the Meals On Wheels volunteers.

Fort St. John and Area Better At Home: A $1,617.17 donation will provide 10 seniors with four snow removals from their homes this winter. We are honoured to provide this for seniors, allowing them to have continued access to the community and keeping them safe from strenuous winter conditions.

“Our members focused on giving back to as many organizations as we could this year to help different seniors and families in need,” says Vince van Wieringen, President, Rotary Club of Fort St. John. “Making sure our seniors have food and a helping hand that sustains their nourishment, healthy living, and social interactions is important to us all in Fort St. John. We would like to thank our sponsors and supporters for their tremendous generosity to enhance the quality of life for seniors in our city today, and for generations to come.”

More than 50 Rotarians and friends of Rotary volunteered 700-plus hours to organize this year’s Drive Thru Breakfast held on Sept. 9. We served a record-breaking 1,620 sandwiches to residents and businesses!

Thank you to Platinum Sponsors Techmation Electric & Controls and Fort Motors, and to all our Event Sponsors for their generosity, which keeps Rotary doing great things in Fort St. John: Action Property Management, Alaska Hi-Way Auto Body, Alaska Hi-Way Auto Glass, Alaska Highway News, Bold Promotions, Bounce Radio, Brauns’ Flooring, Butler Farm Equipment, Canadian Grind, Canadian Tire, DGS, Epscan, GFL Environmental, Ideal Office Solutions, Leah French, Micsuds Truck and Car Wash, MLA Dan Davies, MNP, Moose FM, Move FM, Murray GM, Pat’s Auto Supply, Pimm’s Production, Sign Line, Sterling Management, and Your Plate Or Mine.

What the organizations are saying:

“Just a week or two ago, a 68-year-old emailed me and said, ‘I can hardly pay for my rent, are you able to help out?’ It was someone who had never come here before, and now is reaching out in a new way. Absolutely we can help. We said, ‘Don’t just come get a Christmas hamper but sign up for the food bank and come access our services regularly so you can still keep paying rent.’ Those aren’t uncommon stories. When a person has worked as hard as they have and as long as they have, that shouldn’t have to be their situation, but there are so many different circumstances that get them there. You get older, you have higher medical costs. Do you pay for food, or do you pay for medication? We’re that safety net. We’re there to make sure that people aren’t left on their own.” - Jared Braun, Executive Director, Salvation Army Fort St. John

“For our commitment right now, we have approximately 8,800 meals a year to a figure of $96,800 annually because of inflation and the high cost of food. Our needs vary as our numbers fluctuate. Every dollar we get is a dollar we don’t have, so we’re grateful for every one of them. It is with thankful hearts that I and all board members of the FSJ & Area Senior Care Foundation want to thank the Rotarians who work so tirelessly to raise funds to help those in need, and who supported us in our endeavour to nourish the vulnerable senior population of the area through our Meals On Wheels program.” - Roxanne Chmelyk, President, Fort St. John and Area Senior Care Foundation

“We at North Peace Seniors Housing are trying hard to promote a community style of living, not just apartments. By fixing up this Solarium, it gives them one more place to gather with friends, family, or with fellow tenants. It’s somewhere where they can relax, they can have a game of cards, they can enjoy each other’s company and carry on that community. Right now, with Covid, that’s so important. This donation from Rotary is really appreciated and helping us reach our goals without taking away from tenants.” - Gail Weber, President, North Peace Seniors Housing Society

“We are grateful for Rotary’s support. We have a lot of seniors who are still in their own homes so this makes them capable of staying longer with the help of snow removal, lawn care, and keeping our seniors actively living the best life they can. Rotary definitely helps contribute to making that happen.” - Brook Goulet, Service Coordinator, Fort St John and Area Better At Home.

Fort St. John Rotarians and Mother's Day runners this year raised $10,775 for the Women's Resource Society.

In 1981, a group of women in the Fort St. John area organized the original Women's Centre. They were concerned about the lack of resources and choices available to women in the North and the overall absence of an effective method of organizing change for women.

In the spirit of sisterhood, Fort St. John women took it upon themselves to fill this gap by creating a place for women to gather and forge a sense of community-based support. Forty years later, the Women's Resource Society continues in this tradition, providing valuable services including a drop-in centre, shelter for women and children fleeing abuse, poverty and family law advocacy, and promoting the betterment of all women's lives.

“The Rotary Club of Fort St. John is honoured to be able to help a organization that gives back so much to the community,” said Vince van Wieringen, President, Rotary Club of Fort St. John. “Our volunteers, sponsors, and members work hard year after year to provide funding to local organizations in need of help, and look forward to the continued help and support from our great community businesses and volunteers.”

“On behalf of all the staff and volunteers here at the Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society, we would like to thank the Rotary Club and everyone who participated in the Mother’s Day Run event!” said Lisa Jewell, Outreach & Housing Coordinator, Fort St. John Women's Resource Society. “We are so grateful for the continued support from the community. Thank you so very much.”

Rotarians have now raised more than $80,000 for the Women's Resource Society since 2012 with the help of Fort St. John families. Details about the 2022 Mother's Day Run will be released in the New Year.

World Polio Day is October 24, and thousands of Rotary Clubs around the world will hold events and fundraisers to recognize the progress in the global fight to end polio.

The history of polio began with Michael Underwood describing a debility of the lower extremities in children, that was recognized as poliomyelitis in England in 1789. The first polio outbreaks in Europe were reported in the early 19th Century, and polio outbreaks were first reported in the United States in 1843.

For the next 100 years, epidemics of polio were reported from developed countries in the Northern Hemisphere each summer and fall. These epidemics became increasingly severe, and the average age of people affected rose. The increasingly older age of people with primary polio infection increased both the severity of the disease and the number of deaths. In 1952, polio reached a peak in the United States, with more than 21,000 cases.

It has been more than 60 years since the last cases of polio were seen in the Peace Country. Like everywhere in Canada, the U.S., and the world for that matter, the very contagious illness spread like wildfire.

An injectable polio vaccine was discovered by Jonas Salk in 1952 and, following testing, was made available to the public in 1955. By this time, many were crippled and many more had died. Time was of an essence to stop the disease. In 1957, an oral polio vaccine was developed by Albert Sabin, which was much easier to administer. Following testing the vaccine was licensed in 1962. Children lined up by the millions around the globe to receive the little spoonful of vaccine, or sugar cube laden with the vaccine. By this time it was critical to vaccinate everyone in the world.

The illness, which invaded the nervous system, sometimes caused problems with lungs, making it impossible to take a breath on your own. The physicians designed, and broadly used an “iron lung” to assist the patient with breathing. In larger hospitals, polio victims with disabled limbs were put into large hydrotherapy baths. This seemed to encourage use of afflicted arms and legs.

When the polio epidemic first struck Fort St. John in 1948, some 50 patients were treated. The only polio patient lost at that time was the brother of Sister Marcellina. The Elks club aided Dr. Cormack and Mr. Murphy, the Providence Hospital handyman, to improvise a “Clover Tank” for hydrotherapy for the polio patients. The army doctors assisted the local doctors at this crucial time and a hydraulic jack was improvised to raise and lower patients into and out of the water. This clover leaf shaped bathtub is now used for a flower bed near the entrance to the Fort St. John North Peace Museum. It is planted with lovely flowers every year and is possibly visited by some local pioneer that knew or was related to someone that benefited from it during the epidemic.

In 1952, news came of the death of another polio victim. This was Mrs. Gordon Ecklund who had lived in Taylor with her husband and infant. Mr. Ecklund was the son of a well-known Baldonnel farmer.

Mrs. Ecklund was originally from Dawson Creek. Mrs. Ecklund had been admitted to Providence Hospital and as her condition deteriorated her physician, Dr. G.N. Cormack, put in a call for assistance from the Department of Health in Victoria. The RCAF’s hospital plane answered the call, flying into the airport here.

The plane carried a flight commander, medical man, a nurse, and a first aid man with respirator equipment. This team was in readiness to answer such emergency calls, and the big DC3 was equipped for any type of call.

Unfortunately the assistance of the rescue team was of no avail as just a few hours after their arrival the patient succumbed. She was the victim of the most serious type of polio, the progress was rapid and at that time there was no known cure. The date was November 11, 1952, and Mr. Salk would be busy in his lab testing the first vaccine.

As the polio victims recovered, no other deaths were mentioned until October 8, 1953, when Joseph Wagner, just 25 years old, passed away in the hospital in Edmonton. Joseph was the son of Leo Wagner, who lived at the airport subdivision at the time and later moved to Cecil Lake where he farmed with his son Tony and daughter -in-law Roxanne (my oldest sister). Joseph was a victim of polio and passed away just shortly after the dreaded disease claimed his elder sister, Martha, in Washington, D.C.

Joseph’s death was the climax of a series of misfortunes. This started when weeks previous he was stricken with a ruptured appendix while working on his house at his farm near Fort St. John. He was unable to summon help, although he fired his rifle with the customary distress signal of three shots, and lay in agony the four days before he was able to walk and crawl the long mile to his neighbour.

He was then flown to Edmonton and it appeared that he was recovering nicely from the operation when he was stricken with polio. According to his father, who had managed to make the trip to Edmonton to see his son, Joseph had been put into an iron lung when he was completely paralyzed.

“He was a very fine young man,” Duncan Cran had reported, as he had worked with Joe many times as a surveyor. Joe was brought back to Fort St. John by his sister, the late Mrs. John Budac, for burial in the Fort St. John Cemetery. Pallbearers from Fort St. John and Baldonnel were Gabriel, Alliouis, and Valentine Sperling, Paul Odermat, Raymond and Gabriel Wagner.

Polio has left its scars on the North Peace, but thankfully the illness is controlled and continues to be prevented as it is included in the Province of B.C.’s vaccination program. Infants receiving childhood vaccines are now protected against the disease.

In 1988, Rotary International partnered with Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the World Health Organization, Unicef and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to work in a unified effort to wipe out polio off the face of the earth.

Rotary first started immunizing children in third world countries in 1985. Their main responsibility is fundraising, advocacy and volunteer recruitment. The vaccines discovered by Salk and Sabin in the 1950s were the beginning of the end of polio as the vaccines have eliminated polio completely from most countries. The number of reported cases each year world wide has been reduced to just a handful, but that’s still too many. That is enough reason to continue with the vaccinations.
